Box Score: No. 4 Coyotes 3, UC San Diego 1
LA JOLLA -- Not even an opening-set loss could curtail No. 4-ranked Cal State San Bernardino from earning a convincing victory over one of its fiercest rivals.
Behind
Nicole Moore's 17 kills, the visiting Coyotes played impressively with a 3-1 victory over host UC San Diego in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
The win was CSUSB's 10th straight conference victory and 11th consecutive overall. The Coyotes, who won 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-12, stand 13-1 overall and conclude the first half of conference play at No. 25 Cal State East Bay on Saturday night.
A 7-3 run led by Katie Condon's two kills put the Tritons out front in the opening set, but it would be a night the Coyotes owned in the next three sets.
CSUSB ran off to a 6-0 lead in set two and never relinquished the lead. Moore had two kills in that run and finished the set with a three, while All-American
Samantha Middleborn had four kills for the set and teammates
Jane Chafeh and
Megan Johnson each had three.
A total of 10 ties and four lead changes were the keys in set three. A Middleborn kill tied the set at 10-10 and the Coyotes slowly built a lead that the Tritons could not answer. Leading 20-18, Middleborn threw down another kill and Johnson added another before Condon committed an attack error.
In set four, the Coyotes ran off another big run -- this time jumping out front 13-3. Three kills from Moore and two each from Chafeh and Middleborn would be the advantage the Coyotes needed to remain in front.
