Saturday night block party puts No. 8 Coyotes in control

-- Junior All-American Samantha Middleborn and sophomore Camille Smith combined for 13 block assists, All-American Jane Chafeh threw down 17 kills and the No. 8-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes dominated in a 3-0 win over visiting Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Saturday night block party for the Coyotes, now 18-2 overall and on top of the CCAA at 14-1, was an effort about control. It also helped that the Coyotes forced the Golden Eagles (11-8, 8-7), into 23 attack errors and were aided with five Golden Eagle service errors.

The 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 victory was CSUSB's third in as many days and its fifth straight since losing at Cal State East Bay on Oct. 9. The Coyotes also remain unbeaten in their last 39 home games and have won their last 29 conference home matches.

Leading 2-0, the Coyotes and Golden Eagles had six tie scores in the third set until the Coyotes gained control.

With the set tied at 17-17, senior Nicole Moore threw down a kill to push the Coyotes ahead by a point. CSULA then helped the Coyotes' cause with an attack error and Middleborn followed with a kill and the Coyotes led 20-17.

Three more attack errors by the Golden Eagles put the score at 24-19 CSUSB and Morgan Carty finished the night with a kill.

Smith offered a steady performance with a 5-0-6 effort on the attack, 27 assists, nine digs and five block assists. Her blocking partner Middleborn finished with six kills, one solo block and eight block assists. She began the week ranked 16th in the NCAA in blocks/set at 1.16 and that number will increase this to 1.26.

Chafeh added five digs to her 17 kills and two block assists. Moore finished with seven kills.

The Golden Eagles were led by Zuzana Cizova's 10 kills.
