Box Score: Coyotes def. Cal Poly Pomona 2-1
POMONA -- Three straight wins have propelled the Cal State San Bernardino women's soccer team back into contention for potential postseason play.
And head coach
Travis Clarke can dish out credit in all sorts of ways.
The Coyotes received goals from
Kristina Gomez and
Unity Beddingfield as they went on to earn a 2-1 victory over the host Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Sunday at Kellogg Field.
The victory pushed CSUSB to an 8-5-1 overall slate and 6-5-1 in the CCAA, while the Broncos in all likelihood are out of the conference race. They are 6-5-3, 4-5-3.
"It was a competitive game and both teams fought hard,'' Clarke said. "It was great get an early goal. From that point, we settled in for much of the first half. Cal Poly did a nice job in the second half as it took a lot of effort on our part to hold them off".
"Unity had a great counter attack with two minutes left to seal the win for us. I also thought
Tiffany Mallick did a great job in the goal and our back line was quite organized for most of the match."
Gomez put the Coyotes on the scoreboard in the game's 11th minute when she handled teammate
Jani Carmona's pass and punched it past Broncos GK Sarah Rohman.
The game remained at 1-0 for much of the game until things heated up from both teams with three minutes remaining.
Beddingfield pushed CSUSB's lead to 2-0 on a pass from
Jenna Sanchez. On the next possession, CPP broke up Mallick's shutout bid with a goal only nine seconds later.
The Coyotes return to Coyote Premier Field on Friday when they play host to CSU East Bay. Kickoff is 11:30 a.m.
