Box Score: Coyotes def. Cal Poly Pomona 3-1
SAN BERNARDINO --
Jani Carmona continues to show her ability as a goal scorer and visiting Cal Poly Pomona found out on a cool, overcast Friday afternoon.
Carmona scored twice and pushed her season total to 11 goals as the host Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes scored three unanswered goals and went on to a 3-1 victory over the Broncos in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's play.
CSUSB is 7-5-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the CCAA, while CPP dropped to 6-4-3, 4-4-3. The two teams complete the weekend with a 3:00 p.m. Sunday start at Kellogg Field. The game time is a result of CPP's Pumpkin Festival that draws thousands to the CPP campus each fall.
Carmona put CSUSB on the scoreboard in the 28th minute. Teammate
Casey Hirsch sent a cross to Carmona and the Lompoc native took advantage of a clearing that occurred when two Broncos collided and fell to the ground in front of the box. Carmona made the Broncos pay and CSUSB led 1-0.
Nine minutes later,
Allison Pena gave CSUSB a 2-0 lead when
Carissa Kutkowski earned her third assist in two games and Pena scored with a shot past CPP GK Sarah Rohman's left-side.
The game remained at 2-0 for much of the way until Carmona struck again, this time in the 82nd minute. She worked her way on the left side and earned an unopposed look and scored.
CPP's Britany Garrett broke up the Coyotes'
Tiffany Mallick's shutout on a goal set-up by Valerie Strawn with just five-plus minutes remaining.
Mallick had five saves on the day and CSUSB totaled 13 shots with eight SOG. CPP had eight shots with six SOG -- two from Gloria Gonzalez.
