Bryan LeDuc and
Lawrence Tyson knocked down back-to-back three-pointers in the final two minutes Friday night and LeDuc followed with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Humboldt State, 71-66, in a men's CCAA conference game in Coussoulis Arena.
The victory improved the Coyotes to 4-1 in the CCAA and 6-3 overall while the Lumberjacks are now 5-2 in CCAA play and 8-4 overall. CSUSB hosts Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night while the 'Jacks are at Cal Poly Pomona.
LeDuc scored all 13 of his points in the second half, grabbed three rebounds and sank all six free throw attempts to leading the Coyotes charge after they fell behind 28-26 at the half and were down by six 34-28 early in the second half against Humboldt State.
Junior
David Jefferson, who attended Humboldt State as a freshman, tied LeDuc for the team lead with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Tyson and
Aaron Hill each had 11 points. Tyson and point guard
Corey Caston each collected four assists on the night.
All-CCAA guard Zac Tiedeman led the 'Jacks with 17 points while Ellio Babcock-Krenk had 11 points, all in the first half. Brian Morris came off the bench to score 10 points and grab a team-high seven rebounds.
The Coyotes improved their record against Humboldt State to 10-3 alltime and have never lost to the 'Jacks in Coussoulis Arena. CSUSB is now 6-2 against them in CCAA play since they joined the CCAA.
The two teams were physical the entire game but it was Humboldt who shot the ball slightly better in the first half to take a 28-26 lead to the locker room. The Jacks shot 41 percent (7 of 17) and were 6 of 9 from the three (67 percent) and hit eight of nine free throws. CSUSB shot just 34 percent largely due to missing often from outside (3 of 16 (19 percent).
The Coyotes got the lead on back-to-back three pointers by Tyson and junior
Ryan Kinney to take a 42-40 lead with 12:52 left in the game. and it became a see-saw affair after that. A jumper by Kevin Atkins gave the 'Jacks a 54-50 lead with 7:40 remaining but the Coyotes tied it at 58-all on a free throw by Jefferson with 4:07 left.
It was tied at 61-all on a free throw by Morris when LeDuc knocked down a three and after Tiedeman scored on a layup, Tyson hit another three with 57 seconds left for a 67-63 CSUSB lead. Jefferson's free throw made it 68-63 with 30 seconds left.
Morris completed a three-point play to make it 68-66 but LeDuc was fouled by Atkins and sank both free throws for a 70-66 advantage with 17 seconds left. Jefferson closed out the scoring with a free throw (he was 7 of 13 from the line). Baxter and Tiedeman each missed wild three-point attempts in the final seconds.
The score was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands 11 times in the contest.
