UC San Diego took advantage of two accurate corner kicks late in the second half Sunday to defeat host Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, in a CCAA conference women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The loss snapped a four-match win streak for the Coyotes, leaving them 5-5 on the season and 4-2 in the CCAA. UCSD, ranked No. 5 in the West Region, improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA.
Tritons freshman defender Ellen Wilson knocked in the first goal at close range in the box following a spot-on corner kick off the foot of Alexia Zatarain at 68:56 for a 1-0 UCSD lead. The Tritons came back at 74:35 to score on Sara Bolton's corner that was headed into the goal by sophomore midfielder Anne Wethe.
UCSD carried the fight to the Coyotes in the second half, outshooting CSUSB 8-4 in the final 45 minutes. The first half was action-packed with both teams having multiple chances to score. However, Tritons goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong saved five shots tried by the Coyotes while CSUSB keeper
Laura Lyons stopped four Tritons chances.
It was the fourth time this season that the Coyotes have been blanked.
The Coyotes will host Cal State L.A. next Friday at Coyote Premier Field followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 4.
