Senior defender Stuart Gallant converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute Sunday as Sonoma State's men's soccer team defeated host Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory improved the Seawolves, ranked No. 10 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region, to 6-0-2 on the season, 3-0-1 in the CCAA while the Coyotes, ranked No. 5 in the West Region, are now 6-2 on the season, 2-2 in CCAA play.
The Coyotes had a chance for the equalizer with 16:06 left in the match when junior
Albert Cabrera was fouled in the penalty area, but senior
Daniel Rodriguez' try slipped just outside the far post and the Seawolves escaped with the victory.
Sonoma State goalkeeper Brook Johnson made five critical saves and intercepted crossing passes as the Coyotes tried to break through to earn the shutout.
The victory kept intact Sonoma's unbeaten record against the Coyotes which is now 14-0-1. The tie was in 2003 on the Coyotes home field.
Cal State San Bernardino outshot the Seawolves 12-6. Coyotes keeper
Arath De La Rocha saved two of the three shots on goal, but couldn't stop Gallant's try, a low bullet inside the near post.
Most of the match was fought between the 18s as each team provided stellar defense.
