Cal State San Bernardino scored twice early in the second half Friday and then held off a late challenge by Humboldt State to defeat the Lumberjacks, 2-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The Coyotes, ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II West Region, improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in the CCAA while Humboldt State dropped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA. The Coyotes will host Sonoma State, ranked No. 10 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region at 2 p.m. Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore midfielder DJ Vigil ran onto a ball served by junior
Jose Godinez and blasted it into the net from 18 yards out just 1:17 into the second period. In the 55th minute, Godinez nailed a left-footed shot inside the far post off a through ball from senior
Jeremiah Marquez for what proved to be the match winner.
Humboldt State rallied late as junior Ray Lind gathered in a long free kick from goalkeeper David Swick and struck a solid shot that hit the near post and caromed into the net on the far side of the goal at 80:31 to cut the lead in half.
