LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore
Kristina Gomez' goal in the 49th minute proved enough Sunday as Cal State San Bernardino snapped a three-match losing streak with a 2-1 CCAA conference victory over previously unbeaten Cal State L.A.
Gomez' goal was her first of 2009 and was aided by an assist by junior
Unity Beddingfield, who also assisted on the Coyotes first goal by
Jaclyn Clark. CSUSB improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in the CCAA while Cal State L.A. is now 5-1 and 2-1 in the CCAA.
Entering the match Cal State L.A. was unscored upon in five matches and had produced 19 goals in those five matches, so it was left to the Coyotes to bring the Golden Eagles back to reality.
The Golden Eagles jumped on CSUSB right away with Alex Conley scoring her fifth goal of the season at the 2:56 mark of the first half. However, Clark responded at 24:34 with her first goal of the season off an assist by Beddingfield.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the half but the deadlock didn't last long.
Gomez scored her match-winner just 4:30 into the second half.
CSUSB outshot the Golden Eagles 11-10. Jessie Walworth had a pair of saves in goal for L.A. Senior
Laura Lyons stopped six shots for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes return home to face Humboldt State on Friday at Coyote Premier Field.
