LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. took advantage of a penalty kick in the final 38 seconds of regulation and then scored the match-winning goal 3:44 into the first overtime Sunday to hand Cal State San Bernardino's men's soccer team its first defeat of the year, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region, trailed 2-1 until the 89:22 mark when the Coyotes were whistled for a tripping foul in the penalty area and Aza Gomez converted the PK to tie the match at 2-2 and send it to overtime.
Jason Swope then scored the match-winner at 93:44, rebounding his own shot that was saved by CSUSB goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha.
Cal State L.A. is now 4-0-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the CCAA while the Coyotes, off to their best start to a season since 2001, are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. On Friday, CSUSB defeated 2008 national champion Cal State Dominguez, 1-0, its first win over the Toros since Sept. 15, 1999.
         Junior forward
Obi Agwu scored both Coyotes goals, giving him five on the season. Senior
Jeremiah Marquez assisted on Agwu's first goal.
The Golden Eagles broke though just two minutes into the match on a goal by Frederico Cino but Agwu got the equalizer at the 7:08 mark off Marquez' assist. The teams remained tied at the half, 1-1.
Agwu's second goal of the match put CSUSB in front just 1:34 into the second period and the Coyotes held off a determined Cal State L.A. team until the unfortunate foul in the final minute.
DeLaRocha had seven saves in the match  while L.A. keeper Tobias Hummel had five saves. L.A. outshot the Coyotes 21-9.
The Coyotes return home next Friday to face Humboldt State and their former head coach Christian Johnson, who is now the head man at HSU.
