Coyotes down Grand Canyon, Chaminade, lose to Hawaii-Pacific

Ashley Collinwood had three hits in CSUSB's 9-2 win over Chaminade and was 4-for-5 in two tournament wins.
TURLOCK -- Cal State San Bernardino knocked off West Region No. 6 Grand Canyon, 5-2, and downed Chaminade, 9-2, Friday on opening day of the 2009 Mizuno Tournament of Champions Softball Tournament at Pedretti Park.
The Coyotes came out on the short end of a 7-1 score in their third game of the tournament, facing Hawaii Pacific, ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region.
CSUSB heads into Saturday's play with a 16-25 record and will face unranked Notre Dame de Namur and Dixie State, ranked 19th in the nation and No. 3 in the West Region, a team that swept them in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.
In the win over Grand Canyon (29-18), freshman right-hander Courtney Wilhelms pitched a complete-game five-hitter, walking four and striking out three. Wilhelms contributed offensively with a double and two runs batted in.
CSUSB took a 1-0 lead in the second on senior left fielder Tori Beaudette's third home run of the season. Erika Reay's two-run single in the bottom of the inning gave the Antelopes a 2-1 lead.
The Coyotes rallied for three runs in the fourth, aided by two Grand Canyon errors. Wilhelms drove in two of the runs with her double and junior first baseman Ashley Collinwood knocked in Wilhelms with a single.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Holtzclaw drove in the final CSUSB run with an infield hit in the seventh that plated Vanessa Justin who ran for Stefanie Quinn after Quinn opened the inning with a single.
Debbie Shisler was 2-for-4 in the game for the Coyotes. Jessica Palma (13-7) took the loss for GCU.
In the 9-2 victory over Chaminade (7-27) Shisler pitched five innings of three-hit ball for her 10th win of the season, yielding two runs, only one of which was earned. Redshirt freshman Brianne Godfredson finished up with two innings of one-hit relief, striking out two.
Quinn singled in two runs in the third for CSUSB. In the fourth, Wilhelms singled and Shisler brought her home with an inside-the-park home run, her first of the season. Collinwood doubled in Alex Mitchell for the other run to make it 5-2 Coyotes.
CSUSB put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fifth. Priscilla Curiel hit a two-run homer, her fifth of the season, raising her season RBI count to 16, most on the team. Beaudette later doubled to drive in Holtzclaw who reached via a walk and Wilhelms brought Beaudette home with a double.
Curiel drove in Justin from second base in the sixth with a single to complete the scoring.
Collinwood was 3-for-3 in the game and 4-for-5 in the team's first two games in the tournament. Curiel was 2-for-3. Mitchell and Wilhelms were both 2-for-4 in the win over Chaminade.
The Coyotes played well for five innings against 11th-ranked Hawaii-Pacific, ranked No. 2 in the West Region, trailing just 3-1 through five innings, but were done in by a four-run sixth by the Sea Warriors.
Shisler (10-8) started for the Coyotes and yielded three runs on nine hits through four innings. Godfredson finished up, yielding four runs on six hits but only two of the runs were earned.
CSUSB got its only run in the fifth when pinch-hitter Felicia Cervantes drove in pinch-runner Erin Fernandez from third with a sacrifice fly. The Coyotes managed just five hits off HPU pitcher Courtney Kessel (13-4), two each by Wilhelms and Shisler.
