Beltran drives in two runs as CSUSB snaps four-game losing streak

Daniel Stenavich goes nine innings in 4-1 CSUSB win over UCSD.
Junior right-hander Daniel Stenavich kept No. 6-ranked UC San Diego in check with a complete-game seven-hitter and senior Jesus Beltran had two hits and drove in two runs for Cal State San Bernardino as the Coyotes defeated the Tritons, 4-1, in their CCAA baseball series opener Thursday.
Stenavich (4-1) yielded an unearned run in the fifth but struck out five without walking a batter for his second complete game of the season. He outdueled UCSD's ace, Tim Shibuya (6-3) who had a 1.5 earned run average in 10 starts coming into the game.
The victory improved the unranked Coyotes to 19-20 on the season and 13-15 in the CCAA while the Tritons, ranked No. 1 again this week in the West Region, are 27-11 overall and 21-8 in the conference. The loss was the team's third straight. The two teams meet again at 3 p.m. Friday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.
Beltran and Cody Madison each had two hits and accounted for three of the teams four RBIs to lead the seven-hit Coyotes attack. Tim Mort, Matt Cantele and Evan Kehoe had two hits apiece for UCSD.
CSUSB took a 2-0 lead in the second when Beltran led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out single to left center by Madison, who took second on the throw to the plate. Catcher Chris Olson drove a Shibuya offering off the right field wall for a double to score Madison.
The Coyotes made it 3-0 in the third as Kyle Davis was hit by a pitch leading off, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Shibuya and advanced to third on Brent Planck's single. With one out, Beltran brough home Davis with a sacrifice fly to right.
UCSD finally broke through against Stenavich in the fifth, aided by a Coyotes error. Mort singled and Robert Sedin was safe on a Coyote error. With one out, Josh Tanner loaded the bases with a single and Vance Albitz brought Mort home with a sacrifice fly to center. However, Stenavich got Garrett Imeson to foul out to third base to end the inning.
CSUSB upped the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Planck was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Beltran's RBI single.
Stenavich shut out UCSD over the last four innings on three hits but no runner advanced past second base.
