Coyotes win on Quinn grand slam

Toros take game two, 9-3, for softball twinbill split

Stefanie Quinn belted a game-winning grand slam home run Saturday as CSUSB beat CS Dominguez Hills, 7-4
Junior Stefanie Quinn drilled a grand-slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday to lift Cal State San Bernardino to a come-from-behind 7-4 CCAA conference softball victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Toros gained a split of the doubleheader with a 9-3 win over the Coyotes in the second game.
The Coyotes are now 13-21 on the season and 8-10 in the CCAA while the Toros, ranked No. 10 in the West Region and in second place in the CCAA, are now 22-12 overall and 12-6 in the CCAA.
The teams will close out their four-game series at noon Sunday at Coyote Softball Park on campus.
Quinn's game-winning blast over the right-field fence came off the Toros starting pitcher, Regina Farfan, who had left the game earlier, but returned to the circle in relief of Kaci Carroll to face Quinn with one out and the bases loaded.
Quinn greeted Farfan with her first homer of the season in only her 17th at bat of the season.
The Coyotes trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth with Farfan in control, but after two batters reached base, Carroll replaced Farfan and hit a batter to load the bases, gave up an RBI single and then forced in another run with a walk to make it 4-3. Farfan came on to face Quinn and she promptly cleared the bases with her four-run blast.
The grand slam made a winner out of CSUSB pitcher Debbie Shisler (9-6) who went the distance, giving up four runs on 11 hits but only two runs were earned due to a throwing error by the Coyotes.
The Toros went up 1-0 in the second on a solo home run by Amber Angel, her fifth of the season, and added three more in the third inning, two coming on RBI doubles by Khryssi Steele and Farfan with the other run scoring on the Coyotes error.
Farfan went 5.1 innings in total, giving up seven hits and four runs. Carroll (7-4) was tagged for three runs in the sixth to get the loss.
In game two, the Toros broke open a 2-1 game with seven runs in the fifth inning on six hits and two Coyotes errors. Angel belted her second homer of the day and sixth of the season in the frame while Emiley McEwen drove in three runs in the inning, clearing the bases with a long single to the base of the centerfield fence.
Farfan (14-7) went four innings to pick up the win, allowing just three hits and one run. CSUSB starter Brianne Godfredson (0-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in two-plus innings and took the loss. The seven-running Toros inning was at the expense of CSUSB reliever Cassidy Lee
McEwen had four hits in five-at bats and drove in four runs to lead the 13-hit Toros attack. Freshman Courtney Wilhelms hit a solo home run for the Coyotes, her first of the season, in the bottom of the seventh. The Toros stranded 10 runners in the game.
