Coyotes split pair with S.F. State

Shisler pitches four-hit shutout in opener; Gators take 8-4 win in nightcap

Ashley Collinwood's fifth homer of the season was the decisive run in a 4-0 CSUSB win Saturday.
Senior right-hander Debbie Shisler pitched a four-hit shutout Saturday as Cal State San Bernardino defeated San Francisco State, 4-0, in the first game of their CCAA conference softball doubleheader at Coyote Softball Park.
The Gators, frustrated from scoring only four runs in the first three games of the series covering 22 innings, exploded for eight runs in the second inning of the second game to take the nightcap, 8-4.
The Coyotes took three of four from the Gators to improve to 12-18 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA while the Gators are now 10-13 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
Shisler, who stopped SFSU on three hits, 5-1, on Friday, pitched her fourth shutout of the season, striking out seven and walking none. All four hits off her were of the single variety as she lowered her season earned run average to 1.38 and raised her record to 8-5.
Junior first baseman Ashley Collinwood gave Shisler all the runs she needed with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the first off Ashley Jackson (5-5) who went the distance for the Gators in game one.
Collinwood was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the game while centerfielder Priscilla Curiel was 3-for-3 and senior left fielder Tori Beaudette was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI in the 10-hit Coyotes attack. Kendra Wood was 2-for-3 for the Gators.
In game two, the Coyotes broke on top, 1-0 in the first on Maggie Karros' RBI single off Gators starting pitcher Vanessa Truan (2-2).
However, San Francisco State jumped on Coyotes freshman pitcher Courtney Wilhelms for six runs in the top of the second, the big blow being a grand slam home run to left center by Danielle Chapman after Alyssa Esquibel has driven in a run with a single.
After Chapman's bases-clearing blow, Karolyn Cubbine singled. Karros relieved Wilhelms and got Kendra Wood to fly out, but Gubbine stole second and came home on Kelsey Wood's double to right to make it 6-1. Lea Cardenas then homered to left off Karros to make it 8-1.
The Coyotes picked up an unearned run in the third and added two more in the bottom of the seventh but Truan finished game, allowing 10 hits but only one earned run while striking out five and walking three.
Karros was 3-for-4 in the game for the Coyotes while Cardenas was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Gators. Esquibel was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
CSUSB left-hander Cassidy Lee pitched five innings of two-hit, shutout ball in relief, striking out four after coming into the game in the top of the third.
