LA JOLLA -- Freshman
Carly Land pitched the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career Monday night, blanking Hawaii-Hilo, 1-0, in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at UC San Diego.
The Vulcans won the first game, 6-5. UHH led 6-2 going into the seventh inning but the Coyotes rallied for three runs, but fell short of forcing extra innings.
CSUSB is 9-11 overall this season and 4-4 in the CCAA conference. The Vulcans are 5-9 this season.
Hawaii-Hilo pitcher Christine Pedroza allowed only two hits to the Coyotes -- one by
Brooke Stix and one by
Debbie Shisler but three Vulcan errors proved costly in the 1-0 loss to CSUSB.
Land (1-3) gave up five hits, two to Pedroza as she lowered her earned run average to 3.72. The Coyotes turned two double plays behind her to help preserve the shutout.
Neither pitcher walked a batter. Pedroza struck out four while Land fanned six batters.
In the first game, the Vulcans and Coyotes were tied 1-1 after four innings, but UHH got to CSUSB starter
Maggie Karros for four runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. UHH added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth.
The Coyotes rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh but Pedroza, in relief of Amber Waracka, earned the save by getting the third out with the tying and winning runs on second and third.
Priscilla Curiel drove in two runs for the Coyotes.
Courtney Wilhelms was three-for-four with an RBI and Karros was two-for-three with an RBI. Jessica Schatz was two-for-three and drove in two runs for the Vulcans. Pedroza and Sierra Green each had a pair of hits in a 12-hit attack.
The Vulcans stranded six runners in the game.
