Junior Grants Huff came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points while Bryan LeDuc and Lawrence Tyson combined for 31 points as Cal State San Bernardino posted a 77-53 CCAA conference men's basketball victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday night.
The Coyotes led by 12, 38-26 at the half and after a brief flurry of baskets by the Pioneers early int he second half, pulled away for a 24-point win to even their season record at 2-2 and gain a share of first place in the CCAA with a 2-0 mark heading into Fall Quarter exam week.
Cal State East Bay dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.
LeDuc had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists while Huffs hit six of 12 shots and grabbed six rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time. Tyson had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes of play.
Frankie McWirt led the Pioneers with 11 points.
For Huff, it was a career night in many ways. His 14 points surpassed his total for all of last season as a seldom used reserve -- 10 points. His 24 minutes on the court was also a career high. Two of his six field goals came from the three line.
East Bay stayed within striking range of the Coyotes, trailing by 12 at the half but dominating inside by outscoring CSUSB 18-12 in the paint, although that was offset by the Coyotes outscoring the Pioneers in points off turnovers 10-4.
The Pioneers made their run early in the second half, closing a 12-point deficit to just six at 40-34 with 18:28 remaining in the game on a three-point play by McWirt.
However, Huff hit a three and a jumper and LeDuc nailed a three with 15:11 left to gain a 49-34 advantage over the Pioneers.
After East Bay cut the margin to 13 at 54-41 on two free throws by Jun Uchida with 10:20 left, Coyotes junior Ryan Kinney knocked down a three-pointer and a free throw by Devon Davis made it a 58-41 lead with 8:56 left. The Pioneers were unable to sustain any rally after that.
The Coyotes will resume action at home on Dec. 17 in a 7 p.m. non-conference game with San Diego Christian.
