Hoffman, Chafeh on AVCA first-team; Middleborn named to second team

Senior setter Sara Hoffman earns all-America honors for third straight year; second time on first team
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Cal State San Bernardino placed three members of its 2009 CCAA and West Region champion volleyball team on the American Volleyball Coaches Association all-America teams announced Monday by the AVCA.
Senior setter Sara Hoffman (San Clemente HS) was voted to the first team for the second straight year. She was a third-team all-American in 2007.
Junior outside hitter Jane Chafeh (Fontana/Notre Dame HS-Riverside) was also voted to the first team. Sophomore middle blocker Samantha Middleborn (Rialto/Carter HS) earned second-team all-America honors.
The selections raise to 51 the number of all-Americans produced at Cal State San Bernardino since the athletic program began in 1984-85. Eleven volleyball players have now earned all-America honors in NCAA Division II.
Hoffman appeared in 32 matches this year covering 96 sets and has 1,096 assists entering the NCAA national championship tournament on Thursday, an average of 11.42 assists per set, ranking her 13th in the nation in that category. She has 59 kills on .389 hitting with 23 service aces and 37 blocks.
She is a three-time AVCA all-West Region first-team selection and has been all-CCAA each of the past three years.
Hoffman has 4,124 career assists and needs 77 more to pass Erin Brown (1991-94) for third place on the Coyotes career assist list.
Chafeh has enjoyed a breakout season with 498 kills in 33 matches on .290 hitting. Her 4.70 kills per set ranks her fourth in the nation in that category. She is also averaging 3.03 digs per set on 321 digs, second best on the team and has 31 blocks, 17 of them solo. She earned all-CCAA first-team honors this year and was voted the Daktronics West Region player of the year by region sports information directors.
Chafeh needs 19 kills in this tournament to surpass Kim Ford for fourth place on the Coyotes all-time single-season kills list.
Middleborn came into her own with 13 kills and four blocks in the NCAA championship match last December and thus far in 2009 has 273 kills on .357 hitting with 28 service aces and 110 blocks (1.04 per set) and leads the team with 19 solo blocks. She ranks 42nd in blocked shots and 29th in hitting percentage among NCAA Division II players. She was all-CCAA first-team and AVCA all-West Region first team this year.
The Coyotes (32-1) begin their quest for a national championship at 3 p.m. PT Thursday in the quarterfinals against South Region champion Tampa University (31-2) in Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul.
