POMONA -- Senior Mary Carroll's fourth goal of the game, a penalty kick late in double overtime, gave Cal Poly Pomona a 4-3 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Senior Day, dashing the Coyotes' hopes of gaining a berth in the four-team CCAA conference tournament.
The loss by the Coyotes, coupled with Cal State Dominguez Hills' 2-1 win over NCAA West Region No. 1 UC San Diego, lifted the Toros into the CCAA tournament and left the Coyotes out.
No. 2 seed UCSD will face No. 3 seed Dominguez Hills on Friday at Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA tournament semfinals while No. 1 Cal State L.A., the South Division champ, takes on Chico State, the No. 4 seed and the North Division champ.
The Coyotes, ranked ninth in the latest NCAA West Region poll, must await the final poll on Nov. 8 to see if they can even advance to the six-team West Regional. CSUSB concludes the regular season with a record of 10-8-2 overall and 9-5-2 in the CCAA, fourth place in the CCAA's South Division.
CSUSB made a valiant comeback after being down 2-0 early in the first half on Carroll's first two goals of the match. Sophomore
Kristina Gomez notched her eighth goal of the year in the 43rd minute of the first half off an assist by Melissa Lynn Castillo to make it 2-1.
In the 69th minute, Carroll got her hat trick on a short shot in front of the goal for a 3-1 advantage. However, the Coyotes rallied to tie the match 3-3 and send it to overtime.
Junior
Jenna Sanchez scored at 70:45 off a corner kick by sophomore
Kelsey Gudgeon, then senior defender
Ashley Salas scored in at 88:45, just 1:45 before the end of regulation, to tie the match off an assist by freshman
Lindsey Witz.
After the teams battled through a scoreless first overtime, Carroll's penalty kick at 108:13 sealed the dal for the Broncos, who closed out the season 10-10 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA.
