Junior forward
Katie Liby's goal in the 66th minute and senior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons save in the final two minutes helped Cal State San Bernardino defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, Sunday, in a CCAA conference women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory improved the Coyotes, ranked No.6 in the West Region to 6-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the CCAA while the unranked Toros slipped to 7-6 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA.
After a scoreless first half, the Coyotes broke through as junior
Unity Beddingfield sent a ball from the right touch line to the center of the field, where
Casey Hirsch found Liby alone deep inside the penalty area and Liby one-timed the pass inside the far past for the match's only score.
The Toros took on a sense of urgency and mounted several attacks and counter-attacks in the final 15 minutes but Lyons staved off the best shots with five saves. Her last save avoided a potential tie. The Toros' Kristan Boyle hit a booming volley from 35 yards out that Lyons leaped and deflected over the crossbar with less than two minutes remaining.
Dominguez Hills outshot the Coyotes 13-6 in the match.
CSUSB goes on the road next weekend for matches at Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
