Sophomore
Kristina Gomez' seventh goal of the season proved to be the difference Friday as West Region No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino defeated No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, in a CCAA women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The same two teams hook up again Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Broncos field in the regular season finale.
CSUSB is now 10-7-2 overall and 9-4-2 in the CCAA, giving them 29 points. Cal State Dominguez Hills won its match at Cal State East Bay, 2-0, Friday and is now 10-5 in the CCAA for 30 points. The Toros play at CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego on Sunday.
Cal State L.A. (10-2-2 in CCAA) plays at 7 p.m. Friday night at UCSD. The Broncos enter Sunday's finale at 9-10, 5-10 in the CCAA.
The victory enables the Coyotes to post a 6-1-2 record on their home field as well as equal their win total from 2008 (10-5-5) with one regular season match left. Their nine CCAA wins thus far in 2009 is a new team record.
The Coyotes earned the goal just 9:46 into the match when junior
Unity Beddingfield sprinted with the ball along the near sideline, then struck a cross that was collected by senior midfielder-defender Melissa Lynn Castillo who passed back across the front of the box to the onrushing Gomez who one-timed the ball inside the near post.
Gomez has now scored all seven of her team-leading goals in conference play.
CSUSB's defense limited Cal Poly Pomona to just seven shots, only three of which required a save by senior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons who recorded her fifth shutout of the season in the final home match of her career.
Two of Pomona's shots that were on goal were sent in by Andrea Salerno and the third by Carolyn Rubendall.
CSUSB was the aggressor in the second half, trying 11 of their 13 shots with some near misses and four that were saved by Broncos goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez.
It was Senior Day, honoring five Coyotes who played the final home match of their collegiate careers -- Lyons, Castillo, defenders
Lisa Montgomery and
Ashley Salas and midfielder
Lauren Zellmer. Pomona will have their Senior Day on Sunday.
The match ended on a somber note as CSUSB sophomore defender-midfielder
Mackenzie Dill went down with a knee injury with 1:47 left in the match.
