HAYWARD -- Cal State San Bernardino's men's soccer team took another step toward berths in the CCAA conference tournament and the NCAA West Regional Sunday by shutting out Cal State East Bay, 1-0, on an overtime goal by senior Danny Rodriguez.
The Coyotes are now 14-3-1 on the season and 10-3-1 in the CCAA's South Division. The victory gives the Coyotes the third-best season record in the history of the program dating back to 1984-85 and surpasses the 1993 mark of 13 wins. The all-time mark is 16 set in 1987.
The victory clinched one of four spots in the CCAA Championship Tournament to be conducted Nov. 5-8 at Cal State Stanislaus' new soccer and track stadium in Turlock. Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. also clinched spots in the tournament, according to the CCAA website.
Like he did at UC San Diego on Friday, Rodriguez nailed the match-deciding goal late in the match, in this case the fourth minute of overtime. He rebounded a missed shot by junior
Jose Godinez and sent the ball inside the near post to send the Pioneers to their 17th loss of the season (1-17). CSUEB is now 0-14 in the CCAA.
However, the Pioneers gave a better account of themselves than the first meeting in San Bernardino, won by the Coyotes, 7-0.
Freshman goalkeeper
Tanner Olinger, subbing for junior starter
Arath De La Rocha, who was ill, earned his first complete match shutout and stopped four shots on goal.
CSUSB also played without its top two scorers --
Obi Agwu and
Albert Cabrera. Both reached the limit of five yellow cards in Friday's match at UCSD and, by rule, had to sit out Sunday's match. They will be available when the Coyotes host Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
