Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Cal State Los Angeles Friday at Coyote Premier Field, a good showing against a team ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 13 in the nation.
The Coyotes are now 5-5-1 on the season 4-2-1 in the CCAA and ranked No. 6 in the West Region.
The Golden Eagles are now 9-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the CCAA. CSUSB hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11:30 a.m. Sunday while L.A. is at Cal Poly Pomona.
Sophomore
Kristina Gomez gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the 70th minute when she took a crossing pass from freshman
Jordan Cleary in the box and put the ball past L.A. goalkeeper Jessie Walworth. It came after a corner kick by Cleary came up short and she reclaimed the ball.
However, Cal State L.A. rode the strong right foot of its leading scorer Liz Franco, who knocked in a 25-yard shot from the near side of the field that wound up inside the far post for the equalizer just 57 seconds from the end of regulation, forcing the overtime. It was Franco's sixth goal of the season.
Both teams had their chances in the two overtimes but came up empty.
Senior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons had eight saves in the contest while Walworth had two.
