Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State battled to a 1-1 draw in double overtime Friday in a CCAA women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field played in 90-degree weather with winds gusting over 30 miles per hour at times.
The tie leaves the CCAA North Division leading Wildcats with a 7-3-5 record, 5-15 in the conference while the Coyotes are 7-6-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the CCAA.
CSUSB will host Cal State Stanislaus at 2 p.m. Sunday while the 'Cats are at Cal Poly Pomona.
After a scoreless first half, the Coyotes broke on top in the 51st minute as sophomore
Casey Hirsch collected linked passes from
Mackenzie Dill and
Katie Liby at the top of the penalty area and stroked a low shot past Chico State goalkeeper Natalie Bensky for 1-0 advantage.
The Wildcats responded in the 68th minute when Ashley Perlman scored her seventh goal of the season on a chip shot over CSUSB freshman goalkeeper
Tiffany Mallick off a pass from Ali Sward.
Each team had plenty of other opportunties in the match but Mallick stopped 10 Wildcat shots and Bensky picked off five Coyotes attempts. A late goal attempt by CSUSB's
Kristina Gomez caromed off the far post. What appeared at first to be a goal late in the second overtime by CSUSB freshman
Allison Pena was waived off by an offsides call.
Chico State entered the match ranked No. 4 in the West Region while the Coyotes were No. 5.
