Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team faces a crucial homestand Friday and Sunday against two Northern California teams – Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus – that have given the Coyotes fits in recent years.
The homestand is crucial to CSUSB's efforts to make the postseason – either in the CCAA conference tournament or the NCAA West Region tournament, or both.
Heading into Friday's 12:30 p.m. clash with Chico State at Coyote Premier Field, the Coyotes are 7-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the CCAA and ranked No. 5 in the NCAA West Region with six teams selected at the end of the regular season to advance to the regional.
Four teams will advance to the CCAA championship tournament in Turlock on Nov. 5-8 with the tournament winner getting an automatic qualifier spot in the regional. Based on points, the Coyotes are tied for the fourth spot with Chico State with 19 points.
The key here is that Chico is in first place in the North Division and the division winners are seeded into the conference tournament, leaving only two at-large spots to be filled by the two non-division winners with the most points.
CSUSB is only in fourth place in the South Division behind Cal State L.A., UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Six teams in the West Region will advance to the NCAA tournament and the Coyotes are currently ranked No. 5 while Chico State is No. 4.
With six CCAA matches remaining, victories are very important to stay in the hunt.
The women will host Cal State Stanislaus – 7-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the CCAA – on Sunday at 2 p.m.
CSUSB VS. CHICO STATE – Chico State leads the series 10-5-2 and has won five of the last six meetings. The Coyotes won last season's match.
CSUSB VS. CAL STATE STANISLAUS – The Coyotes lead the series 5-4-2 but have not beaten the Warriors since 2004, going 0-3-1 since that time.
NCAA WEST REGIONA POLL (Oct. 12) – 1. Seattle Pacific; 2. UC San Diego; 3. Cal State L.A.; 4. Chico State; 5. COYOTES; 6. Cal State Dominguez Hills; 7. Humboldt State; 8. Western Washington; 9. Montana State-Billings; 10. Dixie State.
