Cal State San Bernardino's women's basketball team overcame a 10-point second half deficit en route to a 68-67 CCAA conference victory Saturday night over Chico State, the conference's defending champion.
Junior
Morgan Pryor scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and
Krystal Urzua scored 11 of her 17 points in that same period as the Coyotes improved to 4-0 in the conference to remain in a tie for first place. The team is 6-4 overall.
The Coyotes' win sets up a critical week in the first half of the CCAA conference season next Thursday and Friday in Coussoulis Arena. CSUSB, Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego share the lead at 4-0 after wins on Saturday night. Pomona is first up for the Coyotes at 5:30 p.m. Thursday followed by the Tritons at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
The loss dropped Chico State to 5-6 on the season and 1-3 in the CCAA under first-year head coach Brian Fogel.
All five starters for Chico State scored in double figures, led by Renee Goldoff with 13 points and nine rebounds. Natasha Smith and Cory Edwards had 12 points apiece while Melissa Richardson and Christine Vest each contributed 10.
The Wildcats shot 54 percent from the field and 41 percent from the three but couldn't hold off the Coyotes in the second half after taking themselves to a 10-point lead at 45-35 just 1:42 into the second half after leading 39-35 at the break.
CSUSB went on a 10-0 run to catch the Wildcats at 45-all on a three-pointer by Pryor with 13:03 remaining. Chico rebuilt the lead to six at 53-47 on a pair of free throws by Goldoff.
Jaclyn Rainville (15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks) then tied the game at 57-57 with 6:22 left with a three-pointer from the top of the key. CSUSB then outscored the Wildcats 8-4 to take a 65-61 lead with 1:43 remaining on a layup by Urzua.
A three-point play by Goldoff made it 65-64 with 1:19 left. Pryor answered with a three-pointer, her fourth of the night, to make it 68-64 with 44 seconds left but Richardson answered for the Wildcats with a three with 26 seconds left.
Lisa Takata and
Shannon Gholar missed three free throws when Chico was forced to foul but Chico could not score as Smith turned the ball over with 11 seconds left and Sam Oelsner's three as time ran out caromed off the rim.
The Coyotes shot 40 percent for the game and just 29 percent from the three (7 of 24) and only 59 percent from the line (59 percent), but forced 16 Chico State turnovers and made 10 steals, three by
Ashlee Ford while committing just six turnovers themselves.
Urzua finished with a double-double -- 17 points and 10 rebounds. Takata had five assists.
