Freshman
Ashley Cabrera headed in a corner kick from fellow freshman
Casey Hirsch midway through the second half Saturday as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Dixie State College of Utah, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match.
The Coyotes are now 1-1-1 on the season as they prepare to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday at home against rival Cal Poly Pomona. Dixie State, 2-0-1 on the season, tied Pomona 2-2 on Thursday.
The shutout was the first for Coyotes junior goalkeeper
Laura Lyons this season as she stopped five shots on goal, including tipping a shot headed for the upper part of the net over the crossbar to prevent a score.
Playing in sweltering 105-degree heat, Dixie State outshot the Coyotes 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the first half as they attempted to control the pace of the match. However, the Coyotes defense played solidly in the second half and the offense had numerous scoring opportunities that went awry.
Tonya Smith saved two shots on goal in the first half for the Rebels while April Hanson went in goal in the second half and played well but couldn't contain Cabrera's header in the box off the corner kick from Hirsch.
