CARSON -- If there is a more frustrating way to lose a soccer match, it's hard to imagine there could be anything worse than an "own goal."
Cal State San Bernardino's men's soccer team held the nation's ninth-ranked team -- Cal State Dominguez Hills -- scoreless for 90 minutes Friday night, but the West Region's No. 2 team walked off the field with a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes.
The decision came down to a defensive error on the part of the Coyotes when a defender's attempted pass to CSUSB goalkeeper
Tyler Kahn went awry and found the CSUSB net just 15:36 into the first half of the contest.
The Toros outshot the Coyotes 18-8 and had more corner kicks than the Coyotes (4-1), but the CSUSB side played a solid match. Kahn saved six shots on goal but CSUSB was unable to get anything past the Toros' Miguel Benitez who made four saves.
The victory improved Dominguez Hills to 8-1-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are now 2-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCAA with a match coming up Sunday at UC San Diego. CSUDH has now won the last 13 meetings between the two teams dating back to 1999.
The Toros are looking for a third straight CCAA title.
The Coyotes are now looking for some breaks to go their way. Maybe that will happen on Sunday.
