University of Hawaii-Hilo scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the match Saturday en route to a 3-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over host Cal State San Bernardino at Coyote Premier Field.
The Vulcans (1-1) continue their Southern California tour with a match at Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday. The Coyotes (0-1) will host Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 7.
Marcos Medina lit the fuse for the Vulcans just 7:30 into the match when he accepted a pass from Drew Geis and hammered a shot into an open Coyotes net from 20 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Gene Okamura targeted Geis with a throw-in to the box and Geis headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 advantage.
The Coyotes responded in the 21st minute as senior
Jeff Meyer one-timed a free kick off the foot of
Luke Bush past the Vulcans goalkeeper to trim the lead to 2-1.
It stayed that way until Hawaii-Hilo's Omar Garcia scored on a breakaway in the 72nd minute to give the Vulcans an insurance goal.
The Coyotes were aggressive throughout the later stages of the first half and the entire second half, getting off 17 shots but 10 of them were stopped by the Vulcan's goalie tandem of Ivan Mercado and Dane Kaylor.
Hawaii-Hilo made the most of its chances, finding the net on three of the six shots it took in the match.
