CARSON -- Freshman
Priscilla Curiel drove in
Tayler Wilson with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning Friday as Cal State San Bernardino defeated host Cal State Dominguez, 9-8, in eight innings in the second game of their CCAA conference softball doubleheader.
Curiel's big blow came after senior
Jordan Dahl smashed a solo home run to right center off Toros' reliever and former CSUSB pitcher Regina Farfan for a 8-7 lead. Wilson,
Jacquelyn Holtzclaw and pitcher
Jackie Jacob singled in succession to set up Curiel's hit.
The Toros raked the Coyotes for 12 runs in the first two innings en route to a 12-1 thrashing in the first game. CSUSB is now 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA while the Toros are 3-3, 1-1 in the CCAA. The same two teams play another doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Toros ballpark.
The Coyotes pounded out 14 hits in game two with Holtzclaw, Curiel and Dahl each getting three hits. Curiel and Dahl each had two RBI in the game. Jacob pitched the final 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, but only three were earned to even her record at 1-1.
In the Toros' half of the last inning, Liz Vazquez led off with a double and advanced to third on an out but Jacob got Jodi Nakawatase to line out to second. Vazquez came home on a fielding error by Wilson but Jacob got Bri Mahr out on a foul pop to end the game.
CSUSB managed only three hits off Farfan in the first game that lasted only 4.5 innings when the mercy rule was invoked with the Toros leading 12-1. CSUSB's only run was unearned.
