Coyotes cruise past Humboldt, 3-0

Volleyball team leads CCAA by one game with two left to play after sweep

Sara Hoffman had 33 assists in Saturday's 3-0 win over Humboldt State.
    ARCATA -- Third-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, using all 14 players at its disposal, swept past host Humboldt State, 3-0, Saturday night to improve to 23-3 overall and 15-3 in the CCAA and retain a one-match lead in its bid for a third straight CCAA conference title.
    The Coyotes, ranked No. 2 in the Pacific Region pending a new poll due out on Wednesday, can clinch a tie for their sixth CCAA championship in the last eight years when they host Cal State L.A. next Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.
    CSUSB leads UC San Diego by one game. The Tritons are 20-5 overall and 14-4 in the CCAA.
Cal Poly Pomona dropped into a tie for third place at 13-5 with Sonoma State after losing, 3-2, to the Seawolves Saturday night in Rohnert Park.
    CSUSB had little trouble with the Lumberjacks, dispensing them 25-11, 25-16 and 25-14 after leading 20-9 late in the third set.
    For the second straight night, senior middle blocker Sara Rice led the way with nine kills on .533 hitting with four block assists. Freshman middle blocker Samantha Middleborn had seven kills on .667 hitting with two blocks. Junior Ashtin Hall had six kills on .333 hitting with two blocks.
    Junior setter Sara Hoffman had 33 assists and nine digs while senior libero Meghan Haas had a match-high 17 digs and two service aces.
    CSUSB hit .314 for the match while the 'Jacks hit .000 for the match, committing 22 attack errors in 99 attempts with nine service errors. Lynsey Adams led HSU with eight kills. Liz Shannon had 14 assists. Toni Kroeker had three block assists.
    The Coyotes will attempt to avenge a 3-1 loss at Cal State L.A. in the first round of CCAA play. All three CSUSB losses have been on the road. They are 12-0 at home thus far. Cal State Dominguez Hills, the CCAA cellar dweller at 2-15 while be the Coyotes opponent on Saturday, Nov. 15. It will be senior night honoring the seniors on the CSUSB team.
