Cal State San Bernardino's women's soccer team closed out the 2008 regular season Sunday with a 3-1 victory over playoff bound Cal State Dominguez Hills in a CCAA conference match before over 400 fans on Seniors Day at Coyote Premier Field.
The victory enabled the Coyotes to finish the regular season 10-5-5 overall and 7-4-3 in the CCAA South Division, its best season since a 12-win year in 2003 that advanced them into the NCAA West Regional semifinals.
CSUSB now looks for some help in getting into the regional the Toros and Sonoma State are ranked ahead of their No. 7 spot in the West Region. Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State have both advanced to the CCAA conference tournament along with San Francisco State and UC San Diego.
The Toros finish up the regular season 12-8 on the season and 9-5 in the CCAA South Division.
The Coyotes had been winless against the Toros in their last seven meetings dating back to 2004.
Earlier this year, the Toros won 1-0 with a goal in the final two seconds of regulation.
CSUSB freshman Unity Bedingfield was involved in both the match-deciding goal and the third goal.
Leading 1-0 after a header by
Jenna Sanchez from a direct kick from senior
Sophia Bruins, the Coyotes made it 2-0 just 50 seconds before the end of the first half when a crossing pass from Bedingfield was inadvertently redirected into the Toros goal for an own goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Toros cut the lead in half at 2-1 when Jessica Murphy lined a hard shot into the upper net from beyond the 18-yard-line for her 12th goal of the season after collecting a free kick from Cassie McKay.
Then in the 66th minute, Bedingfield was the right place at the right time, seeing a deflected ball drop at her feet in front of the goal, she chipped over the keeper's head to make it 3-1 Coyotes.
The Coyotes outshot the Toros 12-7. Alyssa Congdon made five saves in goal for the Toros while senior
Leslie Rhodes was in goal for 88 minutes for the Coyotes and made four saves while senior
Shawna-Rei Kam came on to make one save in the final 1:30.
CSUSB now awaits the final regional poll on Nov. 10 that will determine the six teams that advance to the West Regional.
Before the match, Coyote Athletics honored six seniors --
Krista Feer,
Lindsey Jordan,
Leslie Rhodes, Shawna Rei-Kam,
Sophia Bruins and
Cathleen Rodriguez -- who played the final match of their collegiate careers unless CSUSB gets an invite to the NCAA West Regional later this month. The final poll will be announced Nov. 10.
