Coyotes sweep Sonoma State, 3-0

CSUSB gains sole possession of first place in CCAA volleyball

    Cal State San Bernardino regained sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Sonoma State in front of a sparse crowd of 259 in Coussoulis Arena. 
    The Coyotes are now 15-1 overall and 7-1 in the CCAA while the Seawolves, unbeaten and in first place in the CCAA entering the weekend, flew home Saturday night with a 14-3 record and a 6-2 CCAA record following back-to-back losses to CSUSB and Cal Poly Pomona. 
    Senior libero Meghan Haas literally dug the Coyotes out of several possible lost-point situations, diving for Sonoma serves and Seawolves attacks to finish with a match-high 24 digs as CSUSB defeated Sonoma State 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18. Haas also contributed three service aces. 
    Offensively, senior all-American Jessica Granados led the Coyotes with 15 kills on .273 hitting while sophomore Jane Chafeh had 13 kills on .233 hitting. Junior Ashtin Hall had seven kills and 10 digs while setter Sara Hoffman had 37 assists and 10 digs and got four kills on dinks. 
    For the Seawolves, libero Taylor Krenwinkel had a team-high 11 digs and three service aces. Lindsay Brown earned 20 assists while four players had five digs, the most effective of whom was Rikki Buckshnis, who hit .385 for the match (five of 13 with no errors). 
    The victory enabled CSUSB to take a 23-2 lead in their all-time series with SSU. 
    Leading 7-5 in the first set, the Coyotes outscored Sonoma State 9-2 to take a 16-7 on an ace by Haas. SSU got to within four points at 19-15 on a kill by Christy Sather but CSUSB scored six of the next eight points to close out the set on a kill by Sara Rice
    In game two, the Coyotes built an early 7-2 lead but Sonoma rallied to take the lead at 11-10 on a kill by Ali Walker. Tied at 12-all on a kill by Marianne Fox, the Coyotes scored four straight points for a 16-12 lead and led 22-15 on another Kill by Rice before closing out the set on a kill by Hoffman. 
    The Coyotes went up 6-1 early in set three but Sonoma came back to make it close at 14-12 on a kill by Sarah Illingworth. A kill by Hall and a service ace by Granados made it 16-12 CSUSB. After Sonoma closed to 16-14 on a block by Illingworth and Brown, the Coyotes scored seven straight points to make it 23-14 on a kill by Granados. Mercedes Winchester closed out the match with a kill at match point. 
    Cal State San Bernardino goes on the road next weekend for matches at 7 p.m. on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills before taking on Cal State L.A. at the Eagles' Nest at 7 p.m. Saturday. That match will be webcast at www.csusbathletics.com (click on Listen Live.)
