Coyotes down Warriors, 3-1

Granados leads volleyball win with 19 kills, 10 digs, 5 aces; Chico State next

Seniors Sara Rice (4) and Jessica Granados (13) were major factors in Friday's win over Cal State Stanislaus.
TURLOCK -- All-American Jessica Granados had her biggest night in awhile Friday, pounding home 19 kills with 10 digs, five service aces and three blocks as CCAA conference volleyball leader Cal State San Bernardino defeated host Cal State Stanislaus, 3-1.
Granados hit .410 for the match in an all-round performance that was backed by the strong net play of senior Sara Rice who had 10 kills on .533 hitting and four blocks. Sara Hoffman had 37 assists from her setter position. Libero Meghan Haas contributed 17 digs. The Coyotes hit .302 for the match.
CSUSB is now 19-2 overall and 11-2 in the CCAA and remains one game in front of three rivals in the race for the conference title. In other matches, Cal Poly Pomona improved to 10-3 with a 3-2 win over Chico State (8-5); Cal State L.A. defeated Humboldt State 3-1 to be 10-3 and UC San Diego held off San Francisco State to win 3-2 and also improve to 10-3. The Coyotes face Chico State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Cal State Stanislaus trailed 1-0 after absorbing a 25-12 beating in the first set, but came back in the second set to defeat the Coyotes 26-24. The Warriors led by a slim margin throughout but responded when the Coyotes knotted the set at 24-all. A CSUSB error and a block of an Ashtin Hall attack by Megan Loghry and Colleen Sullivan enabled the Warriors to pull out the set.
However, the Coyotes, ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 2 in the Pacific Region,  responded by taking the third set in easy fashion 25-16 and closed out the match with a dominating 25-12 performance. Senior Alicia Karver, a former star at nearby San Joaquin Delta College, came off the bench to nail four kills including the final two points of the match for CSUSB.
Jen Gee led the Warriors with 12 kills and eight digs. The Warriors hit just .079 against the Coyotes defense.
Coyotes freshmen Samantha Middleborn and Morgan Carty both started and combined for 13 kills and seven blocks in the match.
