Coyotes fit to be tied, 1-1

'Own goal' by CSUSB helps Cal State San Marcos gain deadlock in double OT

Shawna-Rei Kam was the keeper for CSUSB in its 1-1 tie with Cal State San Marcos.
SAN MARCOS -- Cal State San Bernardino was on the verge of winning its ninth match when host Cal State San Marcos caught a break in the form of an unforced error by the Coyotes defense that resulted in the teams playing to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Sunday.
Trailing 1-0 with five minutes left in the match, the Cougars played a free kick from the midfield area that sailed into the penalty area and a San Bernardino defender headed the ball past CSUSB senior goalkeeper Shawna-Rei Kam into the net to make it 1-1.
As a result, the Coyotes returned home after the non-conference women's soccer match with an 8-4-4 record while the Cougars, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, are now 10-2-3 on the season and are now 3-0-3 in six matches this season against California Collegiate Athletic Association teams.
CSUSB freshman Casey Hirsch, who nailed the match-deciding goal in a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon on Wednesday, again came up big Sunday. When the Cougars failed to clear the ball away from the goal, it found the foot of Hirsch who booted the ball inside the far post in the 68th minute.
The Coyotes took nine shots in the match, but only three were on goal. Shots by Kelsey Gudgeon and Unity Bedingfield, both in the first half, were saved by Cougars keeper Kaycee Gunion.
Kam made three saves in the net for the Coyotes.
San Marcos had the best scoring opportunity in the first half as Tiffany VanSoest attempted a header off a corner kick but the ball richocheted off the goal post.
The Coyotes resume CCAA conference play on Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. match at Cal Poly Pomona.
