SAN MARCOS -- A penalty kick late in the first half was the only score of Sunday's non-conference men's soccer match between Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State San Marcos at the Cougars' field.
The Cougars came away with a 1-0 victory to climb above .500 for the first time since August at 7-6-2. The Coyotes, suffering a shutout for the second match in a row, are now 6-9-1 after coming up with only seven shots in 90 minutes, only two of which required a save by the Cougars' keeper.
It was the third shutout in the last five matches for the suddenly punchless Coyotes who scored 29 goals in their first 13 matches. CSUSB lost to Grand Canyon, 2-0, on Wednesday.
Chris Dunckel scored what proved to be the match-deciding goal in the 44th minute. He had entered the game as a substitute late in the half but was taken down inside the penalty area with just 20 seconds remaining before halftime. He then blasted the penalty kick past CSUSB goalkeeper
Arath De La Rocha.
The Cougars had another solid opportunity in the 68th minute when Miguel Jacobo took another penalty kick after a foul in the box but his shot went off the post.
The only two Coyote shots that required CSUSM keeper Tashi Nakanishi to make a save were delivered by junior
Brock Steele, one in each half.
Jeremiah Marquez was the only other Coyote that was credited with more than one shot.
DeLaRocha made five saves for the Coyotes. The hosts outshot the Coyotes 16-7.
CSUSB returns to CCAA conference play on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. match at Cal Poly Pomona.
