ROHNERT PARK -- If there was anything for Cal State San Bernardino to talk about after Friday's 5-0 CCAA men's soccer loss to Sonoma State it was "who is this guy Ross Middlemiss?"
Middlemiss single-handedly dismantled the Coyotes with four goals on four shots, two on assists from Andrew Bailey as the Seawolves, ranked No. 3 in the West Region and 17th in the nation, improved to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the CCAA North Division. The Coyotes are now 5-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the CCAA South.
The four goals gave Middlemiss 16 goals on the season. Davide Hurtado added a meaningless Sonoma goal in the 71st minute but all the damage had been done by Middlemiss by the 70th minute.
CSUSB managed just three shots in the entire match and none required Sonoma goalkeeper Brook Johnson to make a save. This effort seemed out of character for a Coyote team that had scored 29 goals in its previous 12 matches.
Coyotes keeper
Tyler Kahn absorbed all the punishment in the 90-minute match but did save three of the 12 shots by Sonoma State.
Middlemiss didn't waste any time taking it to the Coyotes, scoring off a pass from Cam Vickers just 1:01 into the match. His second goal, assisted by Jack Jones, came in the 11th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead. Middlemiss continued the onslaught with a goal in the 59th minute.
The Coyotes, who had won three of their last four matches coming into Seawolf field, now head for Humboldt State and an 11:30 a.m. match on Sunday with the Lumberjacks in Arcata.
