CSUSB falls short in bid for third Pacific Region crown

Sophomore Ashtin Hills attacks the defense
Western Washington University, competing in its first-ever NCAA Div. II Pacific Regional volleyball title match, made it a successful one Saturday night with a convincing 3-0 sweep of No. 1 seed Cal State San Bernardino before 525 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
The Vikings, 24-4, now advance to the NCAA National Championship Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at Washburn University in Kansas to face Dowling, the Northeast Region champion, in the quarterfinals.
The Coyotes, the 2007 CCAA conference champion, closed out its season with a 27-3 record, falling in the regional title match for the sixth time in the past eight years. CSUSB won it in 2003 and 2004.
Emily Castro led the Vikings with 14 kills and 13 digs as they avenged a 3-2 loss to the Coyotes on Sept. 1 at the WWU tournament. The victory was the 19th in a row for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions.
Angie Alvord had 13 kills and four block assists. Setter Katie Robinson had 37 assists and 11 digs. Libero Courtney Schneider had 22 digs. The Vikings hit only .194 for the match but the Coyotes fared worse with a paltry .119 with 31 attack errors.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashtin Hall (Yucaipa) was the bright spot for the Coyotes with 17 kills and 15 digs while CCAA player of the year Jessica Granados (Beaumont) had 13 kills and 21 digs to go with three blocks.
Sharea Drawn, playing the final match of her four-year career, finished with 11 kills. Setter Sara Hoffman had 45 assists and junior libero Meghan Haas had a season-high 30 digs.
CSUSB posted 51 kills to 46 for the Vikings and had 49 assists to 41 but CSUSB was outblocked at the net 14-7.
Drawn, Granados, Sara Rice and Hoffman were named to the all-tournament team along with Jaime Anderson, Castro, Alvord and Schneider of WWU.
