Coyotes sweep West. Oregon in region quarterfinals

Rice leads Coyotes with 12 kills, six blocks

    Host Cal State San Bernardino, the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Pacific Regional, swept past No. 8 seed Western Oregon Thursday night, 3-0, heading for a face-off in Friday's semifinals against CCAA conference rival Cal State L.A.
    The Coyotes, the 2007 CCAA champion and ranked No. 3 in the nation, overpowered a Wolves team composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores by scores of 30-21, 30-15 and 30-10. Western Oregon completed their season at 16-10.
    Junior middle blocker Sara Rice (Yucaipa) led CSUSB with 12 kills in 17 attacks (.647 hitting) and six block assists. Junior right side hitter Jessica Granados, the CCAA MVP, finished with 11 kills and five blocks. Senior middle blocker Sharea Drawn had 11 kills on .688 hitting.
    Sara Hoffman, the Coyotes' sophomore setter currently ranked No. 9 in the nation in assists, produced 40 in the three-set match as CSUSB hit .370 as a team while limiting the Wolves to .041 hitting.
    "I was really pleased with the way we played tonight," said Head Coach Kim Cherniss. "It was good to execute the way we did and get a solid match under our belt. We were just clicking on all cylinders because Western Oregon is a good team."
    Stacy Bennett had five kills, the most of any WOU player. Amy Herron had 10 assists for the Wolves, the No. 2 team out of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
