Sophomore Brittany Garrett scored both of Cal Poly Pomona's goals Friday as the Broncos edged host Cal State San Bernardino 2-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
Garrett's success enabled the Broncos, ranked No. 8 in the Far West Region, to improve to 8-4 on the season and 5-4 in the CCAA. The Coyotes had their two-match win streak snapped and fell to 5-6-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the CCAA.
Garrett's match winner came in the 80th minute. After accepting a pass from senior Pamela Leyva, Garrett fired a hird shot that Coyotes goalkeeper
Leslie Rhodes stopped but the ball bounced right back to Garrett who one-timed the rebound into the net.
Cal Poly Pomona had taken a 1-0 first half lead in the 28th minute on Garrett's third goal of the season, coming off a flick from teammate Mary Carroll just inside the 18-yard line.
The Coyotes tied the match a 1-1 when freshman
Katie Liby toed a low shot past Pomona goalkeeper Amanda Cunningham in the 54th minute off an assist by freshman
Alyssa Marin. It was Liby's sixth goal of the season.
The Broncos limited the Coyotes to just five shots, four of which were on goal but only one got by Cunningham. CPP outshot the Coyotes 14-5.
