A last-minute goal byTom Caplan gave UC San Diego a 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the men's soccer regular season finale for both teams Tuesday night at the Tritons field.
It was the second last-minute loss in a row for the Coyotes who dropped a 1-0 verdict to Cal State L.A. at home on Monday on a Golden Eagles goal with just 14 seconds left in regulation.
CSUSB wound up a frustrating 2007 season with a 5-13-2 overall record and just 2-10-2 in the CCAA and a last place finish in the CCAA's Southern Division. The Tritons were 5-9-3 overall and 4-6-3 in the conference.
The winning goal was achieved at 88:14 when Tritons goalkeeper Peter Akman booted a booming punt from inside his 18-yard line that Caplan deflected into the net at the other end of the field, giving Akman a rare (for a goalie) assist.
The Tritons jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 9:11 into the match when Josh Levy scored his first goal of the season when he swiped a low shot from within the penalty shot following a throw-in from the sideline by Daniel Pavitt.
The Coyotes knotted the score four minutes later when freshman
Obi Agwu slammed a shot into the far corner of the goal from a pass by junior Daniel Rodriguez. It appeared the match was headed for overtime when Caplan's heroics took place.
Akman saved three shots on goal for UCSD while senior goalkeeper Lucas Pepi closed out his collegiate career by stopping nine Tritons shots.
The Coyotes experienced their second straight losing season, posting a 6-20-4 record in CCAA play in 2006 and 2007 combined, 10-25-4 overall during that span.
