#9 Women's Volleyball Sweeps Cal State Los Angeles

POMONA, Calif. - Cal State San Bernardino held Cal State Los Angeles to a negative hitting percentage in a 3-0 victory Friday evening at Kellogg Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 25-22, and 25-16.

With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 11-1 overall and 3-1 in CCAA play.

After the teams split the first two points, CSUSB used a 6-1 run to build a 7-2 lead. Sophomore libero Saniyah Sobers served four straight points during the stretch, which included kills by senior Allison Legates and senior Kacie Pedersen.

The Coyotes later extended the margin to 14-5 following a kill by Pedersen and a block from Legates and junior Sarai Ross. Cal State LA pulled within six at 19-13, but CSUSB scored six of the final nine points.

Pedersen recorded seven of the Coyotes' 14 kills in the opening set and hit .333 on 18 attempts. CSUSB also totaled five blocks while holding the Golden Eagles to seven kills and a .000 hitting percentage.

The second set included eight ties and three lead changes. Cal State LA broke a 13-13 tie with a 5-0 run, but the Coyotes answered with five consecutive points to pull even at 18-18. Junior McKenna Edwards served throughout the response and recorded back-to-back aces.

After the Golden Eagles briefly regained the lead, a Ross kill started a 5-0 CSUSB run that made it 23-19. Legates contributed two blocks during the stretch, including a solo block that put the Coyotes ahead for good.

Junior Kisa Sagiao led CSUSB with four kills on five attempts in the second set. The Coyotes added five more blocks and three service aces while again holding Cal State LA to .000 hitting.

CSUSB led 12-6 in the third set before the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to cut the margin to one. The Coyotes immediately responded with a 5-0 run that included a service ace and two kills by freshman Lilly Hartman.

Sobers later served four straight points to extend the lead to 22-13. Junior Sarai Ross recorded the final two CSUSB kills to complete the sweep.

The Coyotes posted their best hitting percentage of the match in the third set, recording 14 kills and five errors on 41 attempts for a .220 mark. Cal State LA managed six kills and eight errors while hitting -.051.

CSUSB finished with 38 kills and 17 attack errors for a .175 hitting percentage. The Coyotes held Cal State LA to 23 kills and 25 errors for a -.018 mark and finished with advantages in total blocks, 11-5, and service aces, 7-3.

Pedersen led all players with 13 kills and added nine digs and two blocks. Ross recorded seven kills on .429 hitting with five total blocks, while Legates finished with five kills and a match-high six blocks. Sagiao added five kills and seven digs.

Edwards and junior Jaiden Van Horn each distributed 15 assists. Edwards also recorded three aces, while Sobers and Hartman added two apiece.

The Coyotes will return to Kellogg Arena on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match against Cal Poly Pomona.
