SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team knocked off Cal State Los Angeles 11-2 on Friday afternoon in a CCAA contest at a hot Fiscalini Field.
With the win, the Coyotes earn their fifth straight victory and improve to 10-12 overall on the season and 4-5 in the CCAA.
CSUSB got the ball rolling in the very first inning, plating four runs to take a 4-0 advantage. Senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) opened the scoring with a two-run homer to straightaway center field, before
Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.), and
Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each notched RBI singles to stretch CSUSB's lead.
The Yotes added one more run in the bottom of the second to go ahead by five on an RBI single from redshirt junior
Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.).
The game remained 5-0 all the way until the bottom of the seventh, when the Coyotes completely broke the game open by posting a six-spot. After the first three hitters of the inning reached, Luna belted a no-doubt grand slam way over the wall in left field to put CSUSB up 9-0. Later in the inning, senior
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) recorded an RBI single to right center, and came home on a Golden Eagle throwing error to put the Yotes up 11-0.
Cal State LA scored their only two runs on a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth.
The win went to starter
Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.), who was stellar in the victory. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Offensively, the Yotes were paced by Giesegh, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. He finished a homer shy of a cycle in the victory. Luna also went 2-for-4 with five runs batted in.Â
The Coyotes and Golden Eagles will play games two and three of their series on Saturday, with first pitch in the first game of the doubleheader slated for 12 p.m.
