SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team lost its series opener 17-6 to Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon in CCAA action at Dennis A. Pugh Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes drop to 5-11 overall on the season and 0-5 in CCAA play.
The Coyote offense got going right from the start, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman
Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to cap an eight-pitch at-bat, before junior
Juni Rodriguez (Hemet, Calif.) deposited a two-run homer over the center field wall to put CSUSB up by three.
San Marcos got five runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Coyotes quickly answered with a pair in the top of the second. The first run scored on a throwing error, before Pettingill tied the game with a bases-loaded free pass.
San Marcos scored twice in the bottom of the second and three times in the bottom of the third to run their lead to 10-5. CSUSB scored their final run of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.). The Cougars scored seven in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the Coyotes with two hits apiece in the defeat.Â
The Coyotes and Cougars will continue their four-game set with games two and three on Saturday at Dennis A. Pugh Field.
