SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – California State University San Bernardino women's soccer remained unbeaten in CCAA play Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Menlo at Premier Field.
With the win, the Yotes improved to 6-2-3 overall and 5-0-2 in conference play, remaining in first place in the CCAA standings.Â
The Yotes got on the board early in the sixth minute when senior midfielder Raylene Alcaraz dribbled down the right side before whipping a ball into the box. Junior forward Maya Alston got a backheel on the cross, leaving it perfectly for junior forward Angelyn Peña, who finished for her first goal of the season and gave CSUSB a 1-0 lead.Â
CSUSB continued to control the match throughout the opening half, outshooting Menlo 7-1. The Yotes took their 1-0 lead into halftime.Â
The Yotes had a chance to double their lead early in the second half when junior forward Angelyn Peña received a pass from junior forward Maya Alston and connected back with her on a quick one-two. Peña made her run into the box before being taken down by an Oaks defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Peña stepped up and fired toward the top right corner, but the Oaks goalkeeper made an impressive save to keep the score at 1-0.Â
CSUSB continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, recording eight shots while allowing Menlo just one. The Yotes finished the afternoon with a 15-2 advantage in shots, including five on goal, while the Oaks were held without a shot on target.Â
Senior goalkeeper Bella Ortiz played all 90 minutes as the Yotes secured another clean sheet. The shutout marked Ortiz's sixth in just eight appearances this season, including four shutouts over her last five matches.Â
Next up for the Yotes, CSUSB will remain at Premier Field to host Fresno Pacific on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. for Alumni Day.
