Baseball Defeated on Opening Day

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team lost 7-4 Friday afternoon to the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets at Fiscalini Field in their season opener.

With the loss, CSUSB starts the season at 0-1.

The Yellowjackets got on board first, drawing a walk and eventually scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning.

MSU Billings held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third, when the Yotes answered. Sophomore Ramone Valenzuela (Hemet, Calif.) led off the inning with a solo home run. Junior Derek Hurtado (Murrieta, Calif.) walked, and senior Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) singled.

Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) drove them both home with a two-RBI double. He extended the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and ended the day with three RBIs.

Senior Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) earned the start for the Yotes and delivered, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings, while striking out nine batters.

MSU Billings rallied, scoring three runs to tie it up in the top of the ninth. The Coyotes were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the inning, which sent the game into extra innings.

The Yellowjackets got multiple runners on base again in the 10th, and eventually hit a three-run homer with two outs to take a 7-4 lead. CSUSB once again went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth, sealing the defeat.

Dominguez was the only player on either team to record multiple hits in the defeat, on top of his three RBIs. Seniors Jesse Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Josh VerKuilen (Glendora, Calif.) each had no-hit relief appearances for the Coyotes.

The Yotes and Yellowjackets will continue their four-game set with games two and three of the series tomorrow at Fiscalini Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
