Men's Basketball Topples Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Thursday evening at Kellogg Arena by the score of 70-55.

With the win, the Coyotes improve to 8-8 on the season and 5-4 in CCAA play.

The Coyotes quickly found themselves in a hole, trailing 19-8 at the 11:21 mark in the first half. However, it was all CSUSB after that, with the Yotes outscoring the Broncos 62-36 the rest of the way.

Sophomore Aidan Fowler (San Clemente, Calif.) started a 7-0 run with a three-pointer, which included baskets from redshirt senior Gavin Davis (Carson, Calif.) and freshman Zion Paleo (Diamond Bar, Calif.).

A jumper from Davis gave the Yotes their first lead at the 1:24 mark of the first half, and they would take a 30-29 lead heading into halftime.

The Yotes kept on rolling in the second half and did not trail in the final 20 minutes. The defense was on full display on the night; CSUSB recorded season-highs in steals (15) and turnovers forced (21), while allowing just 55 points, the fewest by a CSUSB opponent so far this season. Six Yotes, Xavier Clinton (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Davis, Fowler, Malachi Murrell (La Quinta, Calif.), Paleo, and Pablo Soumare (Dakar, Senegal) each recorded at least two steals.

Davis and Fowler both led the Yotes in scoring with 16 apiece. Murrell, facing off against his former team, came one point and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Up next, CSUSB faces Cal Poly Pomona again, this time at home, on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
