SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team suffered an 11-8 defeat to Cal State San Marcos on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
With the loss, the Coyotes finish their season at 29-21.
Before the game, the Cal State San Bernardino department of athletics celebrated the careers of 14 CSUSB baseball senior playing in their final game at Fiscalini Field.
Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a 3-0 lead with back-to-back home runs by seniors Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) and Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.). Later in the inning, graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) singled up the middle to extend the lead to 5-0.
Cal State San Marcos responded in the top of the third with a three-run homer, cutting the deficit to 5-3. The Cougars added another run shortly after to make it a one-run game at 5-4.
In the fourth inning, Cal State San Marcos took the lead with a two-run homer, going up 6-5.
Senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and eventually came around to score on a failed pickoff attempt, tying the game at 6-6.
The Cougars briefly regained the lead in the top of the sixth, but the Coyotes answered quickly. Daryl Ruiz hit a solo home run to tie the game at 7-7, followed by a solo shot from junior Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) to put CSUSB ahead 8-7.
Cal State San Marcos tied the game once again in the top of the seventh and then surged ahead with a two-run homer in the eighth, taking a 10-8 lead. They added another run in the top of the ninth to make it 11-8.
CSUSB had opportunities to rally but failed to capitalize, grounding into double plays to end both the seventh and ninth innings.
Rodriguez and junior Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) each led the way for the Coyotes with three hits in the defeat.
