SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team defeated the Cal State San Marcos Cougars on Thursday afternoon at Fiscalini Field by the score of 14-7.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 28-19 with a 20-17 record in CCAA play.
Cal State San Marcos got on the board first off a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead.
CSUSB did not get on base until the fifth inning, when junior Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) walked. With two outs in the inning, senior Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) recorded the first Yote hit of the game, a single down the right line.
Juniors Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) and Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) both singled in the frame, each driving in a run to tie the game 2-2. Senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) capped off the rally with a three-run homer to give the Yotes a 5-2 lead.
The Coyotes added five more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-2. Dominguez drove in a run, followed by Solano, who added two more with a pair of singles, pushing the score to 8-2 in favor of the Yotes. CSUSB reached double digits after senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) hit a double that brought in two additional runs.
The Cougars scored a run in the seventh and hit a grand slam in the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-7. Additionally, they had the tying run at the plate in the eighth, but CSUSB was able to get out of the jam.
CSUSB rallied in the bottom of the eighth to score four insurance runs. Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) singled, which scored two runs, one via an error, and junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) homered to give the Yotes a 14-7 lead. A scoreless top of the ninth by the Cougars sealed the win for the Coyotes.
Five different Coyotes recorded two hits in the win, with Solano and Shedlock also added three RBIs and two runs scored each to led the way offensively.
The win went to senior Dylan O'Connor (Tacoma, Wash.), who threw seven solid innings, allowing three earned on six hits with four strikeouts. He improves to 5-2 on the season.
The Coyotes continue their series against the Cougars with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
