CHICO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team fell to the #25 Chico State Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium by the final score of 10-8.
With the loss, the Coyotes fall to 23-15 with a 15-13 record in CCAA play.
CSUSB quickly got to work in the top of the first inning, as six consecutive batters reached base safely. Junior Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) and senior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) each drove in two runs—Rodriguez with a single and Vanneste with a double—to give the Coyotes a 4-0 lead.
Chico State answered in the bottom of the first with one run, followed by two runs in the second and fourth innings, taking a 5-4 lead.
The Coyotes regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Adrian Hinojosa Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.) set the stage. Shedlock scored on a sacrifice fly by Daryl Ruiz (Fontana, Calif.), and Hinojosa came home on a wild pitch, giving CSUSB a 6-5 lead.
However, the Wildcats responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead, 7-6, and extended it to 9-6 in the seventh.
In the eighth inning, the Coyotes got a small rally going, but were held to just one run. Senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) hit a double, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, and Vanneste singled, driving in Hall to trim the lead to 9-7. However, Chico State added another run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-7.
Despite trailing by three runs entering the top of the ninth, CSUSB refused to give up. Hinojosa led off with a double and later scored on a single by junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.), bringing the Coyotes within two at 10-8. However, Chico State held on for the win.
The Coyotes have a bye next week but will return to action against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, April 17, for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
