LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team earned a massive 22-7 victory over Cal State Los Angeles in the finale of a four-game CCAA series Sunday afternoon at Reeder Field.
With the victory, the Coyotes move to 27-19 overall and 19-17 in the CCAA.Â
Cal State LA drew first blood on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Yotes took their first lead of the day by posting three runs. Senior
Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.), junior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.), and junior
Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.) all record RBI hits in the inning.
The Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own to take a 4-3 lead, but CSUSB answered with 18 unanswered runs in innings five through seven to flip the game on its head. In the fifth, the Yotes scored four times, with a two-run single from
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.), a bases loaded walk from Mejia, and a bases loaded hit by pitch from Dominguez.Â
Five more runs crossed home for the Coyotes in the sixth, giving CSUSB a 13-4 lead. Giesegh,
Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan), and Dominguez all notched RBI singles in the frame, with Mejia posting a two-run double.
The Coyotes posted yet another crooked number in the seventh, this time scoring nine runs to take a 21-4 lead. A three-run home run to center from
Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) was the biggest blow of the inning, while Giesegh notched a two-run single and
Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) notched a two-run double.
A
Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.) RBI groundout gave the Yotes their 22nd run of the afternoon in the top of the ninth, and three LA runs in the bottom of the ninth were rendered irrelevant.
The Yotes finished the contest with 19 hits, and despite scoring 22 runs, still stranded 12 runners. Hall and Rodriguez led the Coyotes offensively with three-hit days.
Junior
Matt Romero (Glendora, Calif.) got the win for the Coyotes. Throwing in relief, Romero tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Yotes will begin their regular-season-closing series against Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at Fiscalini Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
